How the Booking.com Checkout Surprise Works

1

You see the search price

Booking.com shows a headline rate that looks competitive. City taxes and fees not included.

2

You select your room

Room options shown. Prices still exclude many mandatory charges.

3

Checkout — the real price appears

Taxes, fees and charges added. The total is often 15–30% higher than the search result.

4

Sometimes more fees at the hotel

Some facility fees are only collected at check-in — meaning even the Booking.com checkout total understates the real cost.

Every Extra Charge — Explained

City / Tourist Tax

A government-mandated tax charged per person per night. Every major European city charges one. Booking.com frequently does not include this in the initial price. For a couple staying 3 nights in Paris, this alone can add €90.

€1–€15 per person/night

Facility Fee / Resort Fee

A mandatory hotel charge for amenities including pool, gym, Wi-Fi and spa. Not included in Booking.com search prices. Can exceed the room rate at some resort properties.

€15–€65 per night

Service Charge

A platform or hotel service charge applied as a percentage of the room rate. Added at checkout on Booking.com. Separate from and in addition to city tax.

5–15% of room rate

Cleaning Fee

For apartments and self-catering properties, Booking.com adds a cleaning fee that can be substantial — especially disproportionate on short stays.

€20–€150 per stay

Currency Conversion Fee

When paying in your home currency instead of the local currency, Booking.com may apply a dynamic currency conversion fee.

2–4% of total

The €8 Billion Booking.com Lawsuit

These pricing practices have consequences. In 2024, Booking.com became the target of an €8 billion class action lawsuit filed by more than 15,000 hotels and 130,000 consumers across Europe. The suit alleges systematic price misleading, hidden fees not adequately disclosed, and anti-competitive practices that harm both hotels and travellers.

🌳 IMPT: Total Price. Always.

The price you see on IMPT is the price you pay. No city taxes added later. No facility fees at check-in. No service charges at checkout. Plus 5% of every booking plants trees and removes carbon from the atmosphere.
